What is BPH?As men grow older most start to suffer from the symptoms of an enlarged prostate or BPH (Benign prostatic hyperplasia).

These can include:

  •   the need to frequently empty the bladder, especially at night.
  •   difficulty in beginning to urinate
  •   dribbling after urination ends.
  •   decreased size and strength of the urine stream
  •   sensation that the bladder is not empty, even after a man is done urinating
  •   inability to postpone urination once the urge to urinate begins
  •   pushing or straining in order to urinate

In extreme cases, a man might not be able to urinate at all, which is an emergency that requires prompt attention.

What Medications are Available?

There are prescription drugs that can treat the symptoms of BPH but may have unwelcome side effects for example:

Impotence, Decreased sex drive, Joint Pain, Itching, Swelling, Hives, Headaches, Dizziness, Blurred Vision, Stomach Pains, Insomnia, Fatigue, Depression

What is the Alternative?

For centuries medical practitioners have recognized the benefits of Saw Palmetto in treating the symptoms of BPH. Saw Palmetto is still the ‘Gold Standard’ alternative to prescription medication. Many other formulas have been tried, and many are marketed as ‘cures’, but none have stood the test of time like Saw Palmetto.

What is Saw Palmetto?

saw palmetto berriesSaw Palmetto comes from the green, fan-like plant serenoa repens of the southeast US region. In the Florida peninsula, where it is simply called the “Palmetto”, some of the thick, rugged trunks have been living over 500 years! The berries of the Saw Palmetto contain fatty acids and many nutrients. It is from these berries that the Saw Palmetto used as a supplement is extracted.

Does Saw Palmetto Work?

The Government website ‘Medicine Now’ at nih.gov states:

“Saw palmetto is best known for its use in decreasing symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hypertrophy, BPH). According to many research studies, it is effective for this use”.
“Saw palmetto is used for treating certain types of prostate infections. It is also sometimes used, in combination with other herbs, to treat prostate cancer”.
“Some people use saw palmetto for colds and coughs, sore throat, asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic pelvic pain syndrome, and migraine headache. It is also used to increase urine flow (as a diuretic), to promote relaxation (as a sedative), and to enhance sexual drive (as an aphrodisiac)”.

 Is Saw Palmetto Safe?

Many studies show that Saw Palmetto is safe when taken at the recommended dose. Occasional incidences of stomach upset have been reported but were usually transient. There are no reports of similar side effects to the common prescription medications.

Are All Saw Palmetto Products the Same?

Products vary greatly in composition, strength and effectiveness. Some guidelines we believe are important are:

Strength: For maximum effectiveness we recommend a dose of 300 – 350 mg twice daily. Less than this may reduce effectiveness, more may cause irritation or     possible stomach upset.
Quality: Be careful what you put into your body. Only take supplements that are produced in the USA by a laboratory that follows GMP (Good Manufacturing Processes), USP procedures for disintegration and HPCL testing methods. The product label will tell you if these practices are used. Ingredients:  Although the most important ingredient of any Prostate Health Supplement is Saw Palmetto there are other ingredients that work together with it to produce  optimum results. Apart from vitamins and minerals, compounds that include stinging nettle, Bee Pollen, bear berry, pumpkin seed oil and lycopene may enhance effectiveness.

Reliability:  There are many new suppliers and distributors popping up every day and just as  many going out of business. Prostate Health is a long term treatment and  your supplier should have a long term history of supplying this product and a commitment to the future.
